Excellent Dimmer

Review by Bob T, 2010-08-21

I've installed a number of these at my house and am very impressed by the quality and operation of the dimmer. After installing the first one I actually have been replacing all my current dimmers with these. The soft on and off should increase bulb life tremendously and the output is very smooth throughout the dimming range, the best I've found so far.

One word of caution which has already been mentioned in some of the other reviews, the dimmer when used in a 3 way setup must be used with a matching slave switch. It will not work with a generic 3 way switch.

this design should have been left on the drawing board

Review by Todd Katz, 2010-04-05

It also took me some hours of effort to figure out that Leviton had in this product created a 3-way wall dimmer switch that didn't work with their own 3-way toggle switches!!

It turns out that to use this dimmer in a 3-way set-up you need to buy a more expensive (about $12) special switch. (Leviton has slide dimming switches which DO work with standard 3-way switches, however they cost more. They also sell a combo package which costs about $50 at Home Depot.)

In my book this is an example of marketing-driven (rather than customer-oriented) design, not-so-great package labeling, and inadequate documentation. The accompanying write-up doesn't even identify this particular problem in their brief Troubleshooting section. If it had it might have read something like: "Standard 3-way switches can only be wired so many ways. If you've exhausted every possibility and have power to one of the switches and can get the lights to go on, consider the possibility that you are using the wrong switch (this dimmer requires as special switch [part number goes here]) or the switch is bad or has been damaged."

Lots of options in package, nice build quality... BUT

Review by D. Johnson, 2009-10-22

The build quality is better than most standard SP and 3-way dimmers, the package came with three different color faces and it can be used as either a SP or 3way (no face plate however)... actually it's a 3way that has one of the terminals taped off for use as a SP, then take off the tape to access the 3rd terminal. For the most part it's what I expected, EXCEPT!!!.... unless I missed it in the description, it took installing the switch to realize something wasn't working right, I was replacing an old dimmer in a standard 3-way configuration (leaving the other 3-way switch alone was the plan), it took 5 minutes to get the switch swapped out for the new one, but it didn't work right. I checked the wiring 3 times, changed the location of the dimmer from the hot to the load location and back again, rechecked I had the 2 travelers right... but still it didn't work.

So I went to the directions (fished them out of the garbage actually) to see what I could be missing. Buried at the bottom of the Warnings & Cautions list was the answer: "Vizia Dimmers are NOT compatible with standard 3-way or 4-way switches, the MUST be used with compatible Vizia coordinating remotes...", SO this means I need to buy another Vizia switch to replace the other 3-way switch on the circuit.

I wish I had know this before I bought the first switch, but into it for $20... I needed to spend another $16 to make it work. The product is great and works as advertised when you get all Vizia parts, I'm just put off because it basically cost me $36 to replace one 3-way dimmer.

Thoroughly surprised by the quality

I was extremely close to purchasing this product on Amazon, but thought I would just go to depot instead. This vizia line really does look and feel much better than normal switches. its one of those weird things that is hard to explain. the plastic is just stronger and more solid looking I guess. I definitely recommend this to someone updating a room
